Dessa Rae

She was at the other end of the room, laughing after a whispered word from her companion. That laugh alone was enough to turn heads, then you got a glance at her hair and became lost in the waves until eyes drew you into the abyss - instantly you loved her. That’s the way it was with Dessa Rae. I had come here, time and time again just to get a look at her, and be drawn willingly into the abyss once more - addicted. Imagine, what if I was the man over there, telling her the joke that made her laugh so throatily. I see myself putting my hand through her hair, and pulling my fingers through the soft strands as I moved them from her face to ensure they didn’t cover her enchanting eyes. She would be comfortable around me, how could she not be? We were meant to be together, I was sure of it. She didn’t see it now, across the room, but I would be her balance. The one. And yet here I sat. Those soft lips continued to smile at her company, a stranger she seemed content to know further. It was too much. I stood, as I did every night, and with a wave to the tender I walked towards the door with an easy gait. One last glance back, at her. I was rewarded tonight, she looked past the man towards me and her smile brightened just a fraction, but I knew it was for me. With a pause and the image captured I kept on my way, unaware that my life would be robbed mere moments later.
